Telbivudine improved renal function in patients with chronic hepatitis B

Long-term therapy with telbivudine was associated with improved renal function in patients, particularly those at increased risk, with compensated and decompensated liver cirrhosis from chronic hepatitis B in a recent study.

Researchers analyzed data from more than 3,500 patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) virus infection to determine patients’ changes in renal function. The patients’ estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated using Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD), Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration and Cockcroft-Gault measurements.
